Once the authenticator is added, you can go back to Microsoft Account and remove the password. If you select 2 factor authentication, you will have to use both recovery method to recover. What was surprising is that you are then prompted for a SMS or email. When you add the authenticator to the account, you will get a QR code you can scan to setup your authenticator. To setup the Microsoft Authenticator, you have to install the app either on an Android or iPhone. The option for passwordless is not available until you add the Microsoft Authenticator app to the account.
